[Digital Today, reporter Kang Jin-gyu] Naver Pay announced on the 2nd that it will launch an overseas QR payment service in partnership with GLN International, a subsidiary of Hana Bank’s global payment network.
Through this partnership, Naver Pay users will be able to use QR payment services with Naver Pay Money/Points at merchants of local payment companies affiliated with GLN International in regions around the world, including Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, Laos, Singapore, Cambodia, Guam, Saipan, and Hawaii. GLN International’s partner payment merchants number about 4 million in Thailand alone and about 1 million in Japan.
Currently, the Naver Pay overseas QR payment service through GLN International (Naver Pay X GLN Overseas QR Payment) is available at major shopping spots, famous restaurants, convenience stores/marts, airports, and more in eight regions excluding Japan, and the service is scheduled to begin in Japan within October.
To use it, click the ‘NPay’ logo in the QR Payment tab of the Naver Pay app, then select ‘GLN’ in the ‘Select Payment Method’ pop-up window.
At the time of payment, users can pay conveniently without separate currency exchange, as their Naver Pay Money/Points are automatically converted into local currency. If the available balance is insufficient for the payment amount, funds are automatically topped up in units of KRW 10,000 through the recharge account linked to Naver Pay, and then the payment is processed. After payment, a ‘Point Draw’ benefit is provided, just like the domestic in-store payment service.
It supports both the CPM method, in which the merchant scans a QR code generated in the app, and the MPM method, in which users scan a QR code displayed at the store using the Naver Pay app camera lens. Available payment methods differ by partner region and merchant.
Ahn Mi-hyang, leader of Naver Pay’s Global Payment Team, said, “Through this partnership with GLN International, we are now able to provide Naver Pay users with more overseas payment destinations,” adding, “We will continue striving to ensure users can seamlessly experience Naver Pay’s strong payment benefits through diverse partners around the world.”
